Leeds band Mansion of Snakes will be launching their Single and playing alongside Sueli Gil and Soul Rebels DJs at DJ Lubi and Chris Welch’s Soul Rebels Sessions: Africa-Brazil night, in partnership with Leeds International Festival.
This Afrobeat-inspired 11 piece share a mutual love for Fela Kuti and his desire to get the audience up and dancing, with infectious rhythms, pounding percussion and a blazing horn section. Inspired by music legends such as afrobeat founders Fela Kuti/Tony Allen, P.Funk dons Funkadelic and the master of spiritual jazz Pharaoh Sanders, they write and produce their own original material alongside band arrangements of selective Fela classics in a genre-bending afrobeat/cosmic funk/ heavy jazz mash-up.
In spring 2017 they released their debut EP and and broke out of Leeds, playing across the UK at venues and festivals including Shambala, Green Man, Smugglers and Kendal Calling.
Opening the night will be Portuguese singer Suéli Giland and her 5-piece band, playing a fusion of Brazilian music, Latin jazz and Angolan semba. It’s the magic of samba, mixed with Latin jazz and a little Portuguese soul. Already singing professionally and releasing music back home in Portugal, she arrived in Leeds a few years ago and immediately put together a band and started gigging locally.
As they have done down at The Wardrobe for the last six years, Soul Rebels will keep your ears entertained between live sets, lining up some jazz, soul, hip-hop, Afro, Latin, reggae, Brazilian beats and funk. Check out DJ Lubi’s “Soul Rebels” show on KMAH Radio every fortnight on Monday afternoons 2-4pm (www.kmahradio.com), and Chris’s “Sounds Like This” show 6-8pm every Sunday on Sheffield Live 93.2fm.
Be prepared to dance your pants off….this music is infectious.
