First events revealed!
We’re so excited to be announcing the return of Leeds International Festival, and another year of celebrating groundbreaking new ideas, pioneering innovation, boundary-breaking diversity and unique, inclusive, exclusive events.
Coming to venues right across Leeds city centre from 2-12th May, we’re working on delivering a line-up that is set to be even bigger and even better than before, cementing our status as the metropolitan festival.
Today we’re making the first announcement about some of the events that L19 has instore – and we are upping the ante on the already impressive roster of events Leeds International Festival has delivered in previous years.
With plenty of unique events and massive names yet to be announced, these are just the first of a festival line-up which is set to stun. Here are just some of the amazing events we have in store:
A celebration day of all things Black British in the Leeds community, Frank Bruno MBE will be talking mental health and the roots of Black music with co-host Capital’s JoJo, and The Voice Season 3 winner Jermain Jackman – before a massive night of sound, courtesy of soundsystem Iration Steppas.
What Does it mean to be Human?
Have we forgotten? Did we ever even know? Four speakers will be tackling this question head-on, through the spiritual, scientific, physical, and philanthropic – with Tibetan Buddhist monk and internationally renowned mindfulness practitioner Gelong Thubten, award-winning novelist of Notes on a Nervous Planet Matt Haig, co-founder of a route to a better world, through The Good Country – Simon Anholt, and evolutionary biologist and TV presenter Professor Alice Roberts. Expect answers…and maybe many more questions!
JUICEBOX with Tommy Cash and Yves Tumor
A return to form, JUICEBOX is a collaboration with Live Art Bistro set to bring a cult-queer arts party extravaganza to Leeds once again. Breaking boundaries left right and centre, JUICEBOX features headliners Yves Tumor’s experimental electronica and Estonian rapper and conceptual artist Tommy Cash, alongside Grime superstar Karnage Kills and Leeds’ own DJ and turntablist NikNak, for one massive night of revelry and hedonism. Let us/them melt; tonight we dance as one.
John Cooper Clarke: The Luckiest Guy Alive
Legendary punk people’s poet Dr John Cooper Clarke is bringing a show of poetry from his new release The Luckiest Guy Alive to Leeds, alongside fellow punk poets Mike Garry and Toria Garbutt to Leeds International Festival 19. Expect hilarious anecdotes, riffs and a mixture of poetry: brand new and old classics. A night not to be missed.
An interactive game in conjunction with Transform19 and machina eX; Rewire is a quest which will take you across the city centre, through many venues, across multiple days. Your task, should you choose to accept it – be an agent for new company Rewire. The safety of the city is in your hands. But just keep your eyes peeled – you don’t know who could be watching you.
