BlaqueXplosion - Leeds International Festival

In a fiesta of joy, Black culture and the origins of Black sound was celebrated with Frank Bruno MBE, Jermain Jackman, and local DJ JoJo.

Black Health Initiative brought to Leeds a day of discussion and festivity, showcasing the richness and vibrancy of Leeds’ Black British culture and the fusion of cultures that impacted on fashion, spoken word, health, and politics.

The day began with the wonderous Carnival Troupes display, while stalls sold authentic arts, crafts and jewellery. A panel discussion then explored Black community through music, and BlaqueXplosion analysed how music impacted the settlement of those of the Windrush community who adopted Leeds as their home.

Celebrity guest, Frank Bruno MBE, shared his own experiences with mental health, while The Voice’s Jermain Jackman talked about his entry into the public eye through politics and his musical journey.

Jermain provided vocals on the day alongside Black Health Initiative’s #Unsigned Acts. Then the day transitioned into night with internationally renowned Sound System Iration Steppas and guest DJs, combining the songs of yesteryear with contemporary beats, giving a festival feel to this unique, diverse, fun and informative celebration of Black Britishness here in Leeds.
